Chapter 6

Her ears were ringing, damn phone. Semi comatose she reached for it. “Hello,” she mumbled into it.

“Genna, why do you keep turning your phone off?” Chloe said.

“Sleeping,” Genna said sleepily.

“Honey, wake up, I have some bad news,” Chloe said to her.

“The kids,” she said, wide awake now.

“Not the kids. Aren’t they with you, anyway?” Chloe asked.

Connor stirred, looked at Genna questioningly. She shook her head and he pulled her close and immediately went back to sleep.

“Right, I’m a little fuzzy still. Yes. OK, I’m awake. But you should probably know that someone tried to snatch Tess yesterday at Bergdorf Goodman’s,” Genna said.

“What?” Chloe said. “Is she OK?”

“A little freaked out, but OK, I think. So, what’s up this time? Is there a fire?” Genna girded her loins.

“This doesn’t have anything to do with that, and there’s no fire, but there are some pictures of you guys on the internet,” Chloe started.

“Right, didn’t we do this a few days ago?” Genna said.

“Different kind of pictures, these are a little more… explicit. They’re of you and Connor Damon naked and having a hell of a good time from what I can tell,” Chloe said. “He’s awfully fit, isn’t he?”

“What? Oh no. Where are they?” She asked.

“Um, everywhere…”

“I’ll call you back, Chloe,” and she hung up. Still fuzzy from sleep she climbed out of bed and made her way to her laptop, grabbed it and then climbed back into bed. She opened it to Yahoo News. There was the picture of Connor from last night holding her hand escorting her into the stadium and she clicked on it.

There they were, completely compromised. Naked and tousled with her head thrown back in abandon and legs wrapped around him, and he with his mouth on her pixelated breast, she looked rapturous. It was clear the pictures were taken at the Willard Hotel with the golden walls and the mountain of pillows on the bed. She tried to scroll to the next picture, but realized you had to pay, and that wasn’t going to happen. The first time they made love, and some creep was watching. Worse he was taking photos. She felt a wave of nausea wash over her, and she stumbled out of bed and ran into the bathroom to vomit.

Her abrupt departure from the bed and subsequent heaving woke Connor up, and he saw the open laptop left on the bed and the image that filled its screen. “Damn,” he said to himself and got up to tend his woman. He found her naked, crouched by the toilet and in tears. “Give me two minutes, please,” she said and he pulled a towel off the rack and put it over her shoulders, kissed the top of her head and walked back out. She flushed the toilet, brushed her teeth, took some deep breaths and wiped her eyes.

She stepped shakily out of the bathroom, and he handed her a bottle of water. He always knew what she needed. She fell into his arms. “I’m sorry; I’m just not ready to barf in front of you yet.
